A BIG Announcement!!!

Today is the day for an EXCITING announcement!

So far, we’ve had a wonderful experience as a house church community, journeying together in an attempt to figure out how to radically follow Jesus as individuals and as a community. Just as every person’s story shifts and flows and changes, our has as well. As a community, we feel God moving us toward some exciting new dreams that we hope to embark together.

Wanna hear about these exciting new dreams?

We have a new name that we think is very fitting for our community…. Embark Staunton! As a community, Embark will continue to chase after God’s dream here in Staunton. Instead of meeting weekly in a house, we will meet twice a month at the Groovecat Comedy Studio downtown for worship and discussion. We will also begin to have Dream Parties, monthly gatherings that will allow us to dream about what can be in Staunton and will move us to action! Our monthly mission adventures will continue and we hope to engage more consistent, ongoing community building. We also will hold a group that meets during the week to dig deep together, allowing us to grow as individuals and work toward God’s dream for all of creation.

We will kick-off our new dreams during a celebration on Sunday, September 29th from 5pm-8pm at the Groovecat Studio (217 W. Beverly). If you’ve been a part of our journey, have dreams for Staunton, have questions about Embark or simply love to celebrate, please join us at Embark: A Celebration!

More information can be found on our website, Embark Staunton. We look forward to dreaming with you and seeing what God has in store for this place!

Peace.

Update and An Exciting Announcement is Coming…

Hello dear friends!

I am back from Denver and excited to start/continue some awesome things in Staunton!

Don’t forget about EMBARK the Park this Saturday from 2:00-5:00, it will be a fun event where you can help families in need.

This Sunday we will begin a four week series focused around Nooma videos. Also, we’ve decided to move from dinner-ish food to snack-ish food. So bring a snack to share and at 6:30 we will eat our goodies, watch a video, engage in discussion, share in communion and participate in creative worship. Here is a teaser for this Sunday…

And lastly, stay tuned for an excitement announcement about this community that’s coming your way next week!

Questions? Want to join us (because you’re totally invited)?

What’s your story?

Is faith simply about finding and grasping on to truth? Is is about right and wrong?

Could faith be about story? Could we learn more about God by engaging the stories of others and sharing our own stories? And what about God’s over-arching story that continues around us, through us and in us? What if faith is less about right and wrong, and more about relationship? What if truth is less about facts and more about discovering the ways we are connected with God and one another?

Join us on Sunday as we begin a new series that focuses on story telling and why it matters. We will learn more about God’s story and engage the stories of different people in the community. We will begin with dinner at 6:30, then move into story sharing (Amanda is sharing this week!), discussion, communion and creative worship.

Everyone is welcome to join us on Sunday, and everyone means everyone, no matter what. No matter where you’re from, what you’ve done, what you believe, what you doubt, or who you love, your story matters and we welcome you.

Also, please bring an offering for EMBARK the Park! We are collecting toothpaste, toothbrushes, bars of soap, shampoo, deodorant and new socks. We also need money to pay for the different activities we will be holding at the park, so please give what you can to help us create a fun and missional event for kids! Let us know if you have questions or need help finding us on Sunday.

Peace!

Help us spread some love on Sunday!

Want to meet some new people and spread love in the community? Join us on Sunday as we serve dinner at Valley Mission. We’re making a taco bar! We’ll meet at 2:30, carpool to the mission at 3:00, and serve dinner to about 70 people at 4:00. We still need a bit of help purchasing all of the food items, so let us know if you can help with that.

Everyone is invited to help us spread the love!! Peace.

Hooray veggies!

We gave away the first vegetables from our garden! We’re extremely happy to supply food for the shelter at New Directions because we appreciate the amazing work they do for people who have been abused. Our first bag included a giant zucchini, two squash, two bags of lettuce and a green tomato… Hooray for growing and sharing!

Also, we will be serving dinner at the Valley Mission on Sunday. We’ll start preparing at 3:00 and serve at 4:00. Please join us as we spread some love and make some new friends!

Garden Update, Embark the Park, and this Sunday…

Hi friends!

Our garden is beginning to produce vegetables! We are still looking for families, individuals and organizations that could use our fresh veggies. If you know someone who could use a little extra food, please let us know.

Also, check out our upcoming event, Embark the Park! On August 24th we’ll be in Gypsy Hill Park, hosting some fun events for kids and helping them to give back to the community. They will be filling hygiene kits, which will be distributed to local schools to help families. We realize that there are places in the community that provide food to families, but there are not places that provide basic hygiene items. We believe that God dreams of a community where all have the resources to be healthy and happy!

Up until August 24th we will be collecting the following items: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant, bars of soap and new socks. You can bring the items on Sundays at the house church, to the event, or contact us and we’ll come get the items from you!

Join us as we embark on a journey of fun and service!

This upcoming Sunday will be our last week talking about sexuality. Join in on the discussion as we ask the questions: When is sex spiritual? Can sex be holy?

Join us at 6:30 for dinner, discussion, communion and creative worship. As always, everyone is welcome to journey with us, and everyone means everyone, no matter what! Questions? Just shoot us a message in the box below.

Peace!

More on sexuality this Sunday, plus a new missional endeavor!!!

Hello and happy Friday!

Last Sunday, we began our three-part series on sexuality by asking the question: What is sexuality? We had honest conversations about our own perceptions and explored the intersections between spirituality and sexuality. Also, we took a look at some sexual parts of Scripture, including Song of Solomon and instances of the sexual/spiritual union of God and God’s creation.

Join us on Sunday as we continue this series with the question: What does it mean to be human? As humans, we are obviously sexual creatures, but is there something distinct that separates us from animals and angels? If we are not fully physical and not fully spiritual, what does that mean for us as physical and spiritual beings? We will also take a look at some universals of humanity, such as heartache and lust.

And… We’re embarking on a new mission to help some local children have fun and learn what it means to give back! We’ll be hosting an event in Gypsy Hill Park on Saturday, August 24th from 2pm-5pm where children can engage in art, theater, and music activities, eat popsicles and help create hygiene kits that will be sent to local schools to go home with students whose families could use a little extra help.

This Sunday we will begin collecting items for the kits! We need shampoo, bars of soap (individually wrapped), toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, and new pairs of socks. Also, we will be taking an offering of money to help put on the event and the activities.

We’re doing this event because we want children to have fun while learning about serving others in the community, but we also realize that while families can usually attain food when needed, there are few places where families can get hygiene products when in need. We believe it’s God’s dream that everyone will have the resources to be healthy.

A friend of mine helped me to decorate some of the bags that will be used for the hygiene kits, check out the pictures below! We hope to see you on Sunday at 6:30 for dinner, discussion, communion and creative worship. Everyone is welcome to journey with us and everyone means everyone, no matter what! If you have questions or need directions, fill out the contact form below.

If you’d like to donate hygiene items but wont be joining us on Sundays, please contact us! We’ll be collecting through August 24th and have set a goal of at least 100 bags.

This Sunday, we talk about Sexuality.

Hello friends, and happy Friday!

This Sunday, we engage an exciting new series on sexuality. Yup, we’re talking about sex.

Join us on Sunday as we ask some tough (but important!) questions:
-What is sexuality?
-Why is to so hard to talk about?
-How are God and sex linked?
-What are the connections between sexuality and spiritulity?

We will also look at some ideas expressed by Rob Bell in his book, Sex God. You don’t need to read the book to join the discussion, but it’s an interesting (and short!) read if you have the time.

In the introduction, Bell states:

Sex. God. They’re connected. And they can’t be separated. Where the one is, you will always find the other. This is a book about how sexuality is the “this” and spirituality is the “that.” To make sense of the one, we have the explore the other.

As Bell says, this is always about that.

You’re invited to explore with us on Sunday! We’ll begin at 6:30 with dinner, then enjoy discussion, communion, and creative worship. Everyone is welcome, and everyone means everyone, no matter what. No matter what you believe or what you doubt, you are invited to journey and wrestle in this space!

Questions? Contact us through the form below.

Peace!

A Spreading the Love Story, and Study Tomorrow

On Sunday, we made cards of love and bagged some cookies and headed out to Gypsy Hill Park, where we spread the love and made some new friends!

Check out what Sara had to say about the experience:
“A group of us went out with cookies, candy and little notes for people. Just to connect and let folks know they were loved. We were coming to the end of our time and starting to meet back as a group. Amanda had one card and a couple pieces of candy left – she had approached two people who both made it very clear they didn’t want to accept or even speak. There was an elderly man who was walking along by himself – who just generally had a sadness about him. She went over to speak and learned that his kids hadn’t bothered to contact him for father’s day and he was feeling very low… and how much being acknowledged made his day. Had either of the others accepted the card it wouldn’t have been there for this man who truly needed it. The timing isn’t ours to decide, but we never know when/how much our love for someone will matter. Make it count.”

Also, our last study on the book of James is tomorrow (Thursday) at 7pm at Coffee on the Corner. We will be discussing over-arching themes seen in James, i.e. Wealth and Poverty. Please join us! Everyone is welcome to join the discussion as we look at history, literary style, and social context. Questions? Just shoot us a message in the box below.

Peace!

Spreading some love on Sunday!

We are psyched to spread some love on Sunday! We will be heading out to several places (downtown, the park, etc.) to give people cookies and cards of affirmation (i.e. Your Life Matters), and ask them about their dreams for Staunton.

Meet at the house at 3pm to make some cards and put cookies in bags. We will head out from there around 3:30/3:45 and after spreading the love, return at 5:00ish to have a cookout together!

Please join us in making connections and listening to the community! Everyone is welcome to help spread the love, and everyone means everyone, seriously.

To recap:
-Meet at 3pm on Sunday (let us know if you’re going to be late so we can tell you where we’ll be).
-If you can, bring some cookies or brownies to bag and share with new friends.
-It would be great if you could bring a side or some “fixins” for our cookout! We will have burgers and dogs, so if you’d like something else on the grill, bring it along.
-Invite your friends to spread the love!

Have questions or want to join us on Sunday? Just shoot us a message in the box below.
